I’ve chosen Ernesto Melo for my storyboard artist. I appreciate the depth he can create in his backgrounds with mostly simple shapes, and the colors are beautiful. He makes it look easy, especially with how effortlessly he seems to be able to draw cars. He really has a range of subjects he can do well, and the animals (including people) have a ton of expression and personality. He exaggerates features extremely well. Some of the detail in his boards is incredible as well, like the mechanical foot on the gas pedal. The boards are clear and action packed, and do a good job in advertising. His use of scale is very nice and he is able to fit people comfortably and realistically in closed spaces like cars and planes. It all looks very in place. With his shots of the cars he does a wonderful job of conveying speed, danger, and beauty. I also checked out a blog and he explains how to do colored boards in a real hurry. It was very helpful.

Artist analysis

I’m choosing Dan Sweetman as my artist to focus on.

One of the reasons I like his work is that he uses fairly stylized humans in his boards, so the expressions and emotions can be pushed farther than other artists that use a more realistic style. He also does a good job demonstrating crowds and large scale building without them seeming unrealistically large or unorganized. He seems comfortable going from “realistic” people to more grotesque characters in the Alice in Wonderland boards

A sequence that I particularly enjoyed was his Smurfs one featuring the stork flying through the forest and introduction of the Smurf village. The way he controls the framing and camera movement are very clear and smooth. He keeps his drawings and poses loose while still drawing in a very clear, understandable format. Going from the fast paced sequence of Iron Man 2, to a more subtle scene from Mission Impossible.

 I also enjoyed his use of stock images and the repeating pasted robots in the Iron Man board. I feel like he has a good handle on his time economy when setting up his scenes without going into too much detail.

I left my Vacation Board on the school computer so I'll need to post it tomorrow.

Bluebird Spring Show Assignment Update!

Hey guys, hope the work with the Spring Show Ident is going well. Just to mention, Chris Armstrong and Sean Gillane (who will be filming the short) will be coming down to the Cintiq lab to see your work at 3pm on Wednesday.

Please let me know if you can stay for the pitches. Each group requires one member to stay after 3 to pitch.

Greetings Storyboard Heroes of 2013!

Hello guys, what a pleasure to see you again or indeed meet you for the first time!

This is the place to post all your storywork, ideas and thinking for the assignments that we're doing in the Freelance Class. With regards to the first project, we have our Executive Director Chris Armstrong most interested in our progress on the Blueboird Assignment. We met today and I posed some of the ideas that we reviewed at the end of the class on Wednesday.

So, here's a little more guidance from that meeting. It has been decided that we're going to film the piece in the great outdoors. Namely Golden Gate Park (which doesn't have rigid restrictions on filming), so the lab's out. I rather like that we can show the whole Springtime thing with the trees and greenery (albeit with some embellished CGI thats to our climate!).

Chris has also decided that we need to use 'The Birds' as the primary emphasis of the piece. So there are a few great clips I wanted to make you aware of that we went through in our meeting:

This ones the action! And just as our Director told me, don't be afriad to pluck shots directly out of these for the sting - even the bad compositing!
