New as of 12/3

I redrew all the passenger car panels, gave Mendoza a blanket to hide his stilts, and fixed all the problems with the line of action.

I'm sorry about those images from before. I thought they'd be clickable. Let me know if there are any other problems.

Mr. Man and the Dragon

Here are the legendary Dragon boards I did a few weeks back. I really like how they came and I've been getting some good feed back from people lately. There are still a few problems with them here and there and by this point they are looking very dirty but I am still quite fond of them. Let me know what you think!

Class is Postponed...

Hey gang, I'm leaving early for home and my bed. Feeling really rough thanks to a chest infection I picked up at the weekend. I honestly don't expect to make it to class tomorrow morning but didn't want to cancel last minute and inconvenience you with a commute. I will check in with the blog throughout the week. I'm sorry to cancel and will schedule a make up class at our earliest convenience. All the best Shaun

Gunsmoke Sonata Thumbs

So here are my thumbnails in their entirety. They're not necessarily in story order, I was more playing around with composition than anything else. Looking forward to wednesday.

Best,
Mike

Revised Phil and Puppy

These are the revised version. Basically I cleaned up the line work and got rid of a few frames that I thought were a bit superfluous. Sorry about the work schedule again.

In the Beginning...

Enjoy...

Gunsmoke Sonata...

Hey gang, having some difficulty with the uploads for the design work. No surprise there then.
Here is a sample script choice from the pilot of 'Gunsmoke Sonata' by Ash Faharin; one of my most talented Preproduction students. You're all extremely lucky to be able to use such a fantastic idea for your final project. I will get the design work uploaded as soon as possible but in the meantime, please go through the sample scripts and draw out some quick thumbnails for the action.

Sample scripts are downloadable from the Download section of the class site.

All the best

What should I change to make these portfolio quality?

For Next Week!

I know that you may have thought I came done on you all a little strong today but I firm think that there's a problem with presentation quality in the class. As I have said numerous times, if you don't have a the very least a successful sample of the storyboard assignments that you have done thus far in your portfolio then we all fail.

To help you in achieving this I am giving you all one more week on refining one of the projects as a portfolio piece. The following is a list of guidelines to assist you in this:

For next week:
1. Process Drawings:
Up-to-date thumbnails and pose sketches relating to the project refinement.
2. Sample 15 - 20 Shots of Action:
Choose a sample of the action of the piece and examine the continuity of the shots. Are there too many cuts, needless shot transition that doesn't drive the story or characters. Use this opportunity to examine this and then replace needless cuts with longer shots and more action. You'll be amazed at how well this works.

Remember that I am not asking for frames. We will explore the difference between shots and frames in depth from here on in. If your piece already has a limited number of shots or cuts then choose a relevant part of the action and refine 30 - 40 frames of a set piece in portfolio quality.

Optional and Additional Work:
Dialogue Sample: Only if you have chosen to use dialogue as part of the project. Typed up and incorporated into the bottom tag of the storyboards or separate document with numbered links to frames.

Hope this helps you to get this project ready for portfolio.

I'll be checking in on the blog regularly!
Shaun

Apologies and Midterm...

Hey gang, first off apologies for the abrupt ending to today's class. The call with Lucasfilm is very important to the survival and growth of the Storyboard track. I just made the conference call though. Had Marin been on time i would have missed the start - very embarrassing.

The call went well and I spoke to the Head of Outreach and the Director of Clone Wars Dave Filioni and we're on course for getting the creative team out to AAU to present their preproduction and animation work on the show possibly by the end of the semester, more likely in January. As far as a 3D Story/ Previz class goes, it's very early days but we're hopeful it will happen for next year. Filioni did say that there were a couple of traditional storyboarders who retrained in the new proprietary (and very secretive) 3D Story software and that they've already refined some of the more advanced camera functions so that the animators can use the exact camera date from the previz. He reiterated that NO traditional storyboards were used in production. All very clever. And a little scary.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for letting me out early to take part in this. It was extremely beneficial even in the short term. That said I'd like to get the appointment times together as soon as possible so please email me - sfeatherstone@academyart.edu - your free schedules for Week 10 as soon as possible.

All the best
Shaun

Just a few of my Fish n Chumps boards.

Monday, October 20, 2008

my first action themed storyboard. I will also have a finished copy of this by this wednesday for class.

These were my quick idea for cat and frog. I need to edit and redo a lot of things.

Friday, October 17, 2008

I changed the idea I had for my ending. Instead of getting rid of Mr Pod with a Frog decoy, I've decided to have Sam get over his fear of falling into the water and save his friend with an oar.

I was going to scan these, but for some reason it wasn't working. So I took pictures of them instead.

King of Blog has Spoken!...

You're in guys! Please make sure that you update the blog with your latest version of the P & P assignment. I'll be here offering as much critique as my schedule allows. Remember I want you to simply take this final version and put it straight into your portfolio.

All the best

Welcome to the Class of Fall '08!

Greetings and welcome to you all! I'm very keen for everyone to use this blog as much as possible. It's an invaluable source of information for everyone enrolled in ANM370: Storyboards for Cartoons. Use this site as THE source for critiquing storyboard passes for the major projects alongside any other portfolio work you may be exploring. We'll have a few old friends joining us to check on the creativity - students from the Spring section who have gone onto bigger and better things! Feel free to peruse some of their preproduction work. We had some great results last year!

This Can't Be Happening!

This can't be happening! And apparently ... it isn't. I just got a phone call this morning informing me that Digital Storyboarding for the fall has been canceled! To say I'm stunned and disappointed would be a bit of an understatement. This unfortunate turn of events has needless to say left me in the lurch in terms of my storyboarding education. And I'm not the only one. I have been talking to a number of other fellow storyboarders who have expressed similar concerned over what we'll do now that the class has been canceled. We are hoping we can still find a class to take together, but right now we are all feeling a little down. Truly this is a sad day for us storyboard artists. We're missing out on what should have a been a great opportunity.

- Geoff

P.S. Barring some kind of miracle, (which by the way I and a number of others are still willing to fight for) it looks like I will have to be finding some new classes to take. Anybody know and can recommend some good storyboarding classes actually happening this semester?

Digital Storybarding MUST happen!

I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!

There's no way that this class is going to run without your support. Although I have been transparent about my frustration in the business end of the new Cintiq class I learned yesterday that only 1 student has signed for the class! That's the biggest problem right now. The powers that be will not be willing to fund any class with less than 6 students registered.

Before the petition, before the frustration you need to register to make this happen!

ANM499: Digital Storyboarding NEEDS YOU!!!!

All the best

Bad, isn't it?

Matt Boles' Storyboards and Beat Boards
