Mark Milicent is a fantastic storyboard artist who’s simple yet expressive style makes him a true professional. While is artwork might not blow anyone away with how it looks, it is easy to read whether he uses line work or shading. His use of color is interesting as well as his concern seems more with using color to guide the viewers eyes through the board rather than to make it stand out more. His framing is usually far from centered, allowing him to use perspective and the borders of the storyboard to his advantage by creating pockets which will draw the viewer to them and ensure they don’t miss the action. Lastly, his staging and composition of a scene is top notch. Every scene is easy to follow and leads seamlessly into the next frame with dynamic camera angles that keep the action from becoming stale.
The reason I choose this artist wasn’t because his artwork looked better than anyone else but because his camerawork, cuts and how easy his boards were to read. At no point did I feel lost looking at any of his sequences, which I can’t say the same for other story-boarders on that website. Its not as if he is unable to do any complex rendering or lighting but it seems like he is more interested in telling the story at hand. And overall, that is the most important facet of the job.
